Failure Is Not An Option (Sometimes It's An Inevitability) by chaletian (Teen, PG)
There are so many truly excellent Avengers stories that it's been both a challenge and a delight to be able to share a few of my favourites with you. A couple more to end off the month before the helicarrier takes off for parts unknown.
Fandom: THE AVENGERS (movieverse)
Pairing: Gen (background Tony/Steve, Phil/Clint)
Length: ~ 1420 words
Author on LJ:
chaletian
Author Website: on AO3; The Fan Fictional Efforts of La Squeen
Why this must be read: I tend to like long stories I can really sink my teeth into. But sometimes a short story comes along that has just the right amount of everything. Chaletian's fic has the Avengers dealing with a natural disaster (with added human complications) in a South American mining community. What I love about the story is how human everyone is. The Avengers can battle gods and monsters, travel between dimensions, save the world, but they can't save everyone in every situation no matter how much they want to or how hard they try. This is the team dealing (together and individually) with failure. It hurts, but it shows the humanity in the characters, which is really why we like and care about them so much.
“I can’t decide if Stark is a genius or our ultimate nemesis waiting to blossom forth,” says Bruce, as he and Natasha walk back to their respective rooms.
“I’m compiling a dossier,” says Natasha. It’s more reassuring than it sounds. She continues, “Barton made me borscht.”
“Did it help?” asks Bruce.
“Yes.”
“I’m glad.”
