Return Ticket Punched by Asymphototropic (PG-13)

Fandom: THE PROFESSIONALS
Pairing: Bodie/Doyle
Length: 4,900-ish words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] asymphototropic
Author Website: Asymphototropic at The Circuit Archive
Why this must be read: Well, the most obvious reason to read is simply because this is Asymphototropic we're talking here, and she could make the rear-end of a baked bean tin interesting. *g*

This is a wonderfully atmospheric ghost story... or possibly not a ghost story. Ray Doyle is under the influence and possibly hallucinating, and poor Bodie is knackered and trying his level best to rescue them both on the proverbial dark and stormy night. Although Doyle is beset with terrible visions he has utter trust in Bodie, doggedly following and obeying him through the horrible night.

Asymphototropic writes Bodie and Doyle in a way that's quite unlike anyone else's take on them, but her use of language and imagery never fails to leave me breathless and delighted. If you've never read it before, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

This is fantastic. So complex. It sort of reads like a strange poem or lament - except of course there's nothing to lament at the end! And the imagery is wonderful. Thanks for the rec!

Much as I think she has an interesting style, I can't think of Asym's stories as Pros - the lads I see in the eps just don't talk like that... Bodie talking about hellatious clamours in the same breath as scarpering, and Doyle with scungey proles and opening his moosh? We all have our own take on the lads, but I do think Asym's B/D stories slide nice and solidly into the debate about where fanfic leaves off and original fic begins...

Okay, BSL, you need to realise this is a little rude. Crack-van is not really the place for a dsicussion about which fan fiction is good and what isn't. It's about individuals reccing work they think is of merit, so the accumulation of different POVs gives you a list of stories. If you don't like the story recc'ed by someone that's fine, but I would suggest you pass it by rather than do this. It's difficult enough to find enthusiatic reccers for smaller fandoms, so no one needs their choices openly questioned here; it's simply not the forum for it.

IMHO, naturally.

[identity profile] byslantedlight.livejournal.com 2013-05-11 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
And I didn't say that this fic was either good or bad - I said that I found it verging on original fiction rather than Pros fiction. I didn't even say that I didn't like it, in fact I think it's a fun story. I'm surprised you find that rude.

Crack_van is a place for people to rec stories they like, and for other people to comment too. Commenting is allowed. From the user info:
It’s just a place to find everything you need to enjoy new fandoms without fear of bad!fic, WiP’s or confusing scenarios.
The goal is a balanced and sustainable recs community serving all fandoms. Volunteers rotate on a monthly basis, and guarantee the community a minimum of one rec per week, of an outstanding fic in their fandom. All ratings, all pairings, het, gen and slash are all welcome.

So it seems to me that a comment explaining someone finds a fic more original and less episode-based, adds to the "balance", and might be helpful to someone looking into Pros as a new fandom - I certainly would have found it so.

On what do you base your opinion that crack_van is a place where discussion/different opinions aren't allowed? I can't see anything in the comm guidelines that says so. I appreciate that you don't seem to like discussion/different opinions about stories (and I can't help but notice that the only times you comment to me these days are when you want to criticise something you don't approve of), but other people might be happy to read them, and I don't think it's okay to try and stop people talking about things. Livejournal is still about people talking politely and freely to each other.

I appreciate that you don't seem to like discussion/different opinions about stories Whoa.. how to go from A to Z in your assumptions about me in a single comment. On what are you basing this on, on the twice I've disagreed with you about something recently??? Find something else that shows I don't like different opinions about stories or discussions about them and we'll talk.

(and I can't help but notice that the only times you comment to me these days are when you want to criticise something you don't approve of) See above. Yes, I fully admit to disagreeing with you twice recently. And respectfully, or so I thought.

Livejournal is still about people talking politely and freely to each other Never said it wasn't.

Commenting is allowed Never said it wasn't. Just said it "isn't really the place". Not the same thing at all.

Respond, of course. Or PM me if you wish, because I'm done here. Apologies to Snail, because this isn't the place for you and I to continue this.

We seem to have different ideas about what constitutes rude (and perhaps respectful) compared to opinion, but I don't feel a need to go and find other examples for you, recent or otherwise. I also don't feel a need to continue anything, but you're welcome to email me if you want to, because crack_van isn't the place for what seems to be a private discussion/disagreement, far away from the original post and my original comment.

At list the current polemics made me feel like reading the story, and the author; I like the exchange of contradictory comments and opinions. And taking part in them. I do it all the time. Here seems as good a place as anywhere else in the fandoms world.

Ohh, good pick! Thanks!

Love this writer - one of my favourites in Pros.

I treat fics by this author as wonderful AU worlds, where everything is just slightly off kilter. They're very enjoyable reads, thanks for reccing something I had long forgotten about.
