Doyle & Bodie - Beginnings by Jaicen5 (PG)

Fandom: THE PROFESSIONALS
Pairing: Bodie/Doyle
Length: 34,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jaicen5
Author Website: As far as I can see, only on LiveJournal. ETA Found it at last! On AO3
Why this must be read: When I started making my list of the stories and authors I wanted to rec for the van, Jaicen was high up on my must-haves. So I was shocked, shocked I tell you, when I searched the van from stem to stern and could find no sign of a previous rec for her - I may have missed it, but blowed if I could find one.

Mates who know my love of slash will be checking for the pod and reaching for the garlic, because 'Beginnings' is gen... but to quote Jaicen, 'You could call it gen. I just call it a story.' For me, it's gen at its best: exciting, true to the lads on the screen, crackling with chemistry... and wonderfully nice and long. It's the kind of story to curl up with on the sofa on a dark wet night and lose yourself in.

As you can guess from the title, it's Jaicen's take on how the lads came to join CI5 - their recruitment, meeting, partnering. They get off to a rough start, but the partnership and the beginnings of friendship are being born in front of your eyes. Jaicen writes as though writing for the screen, and although there's plenty of action, there's nothing rushed or snatched about her writing. If you haven't read this before, and whether you prefer slash or gen, I promise you'll enjoy it. Or you can spank me *g*

That's extraordinary, that Jaicen hasn't been recced before! Because her work is awesome and I never tire of reading it.
Great rec, thank you!

I'm so glad you've chosen this story! One of the great things about my recently acquired Kindle is that I'm now catching up on rereading or reading for the first time many of the longer stories and I recently did this with Jaicen's stories and absolutely loved every one of them, particularly this one. I think I'd go so far as to say that her stories actually helped to refresh my love of Pros fiction, but fiction with a greater emphasis on stories with action, plot and a thoughtful and thought-through depiction of the relationship between Bodie and Doyle. (I think Jaicen's Beginnings is a great example of the latter.)

So glad you chose this story!

Oh, yes, I still love and prefer paper books but if it's a choice between reading onscreen or from a kindle then I much prefer the latter.

Carry on crackvan-ing! I'm enjoying this.

I'm less and less enjoying slash stories because I am no longer able to really believe in their premises, except for my B/C pairing for some reason (well, I know the reason: they are not partners and they are not friends). What I'm looking for and find nowhere are case stories dealing with serious moral, social and political issues (in the line of Cowley struggling with the establishment, for example).

I found a few of them and have them recced on [livejournal.com profile] crack_van (among others).

I still read slash but enjoy it only when the sexual moves have some relevance to the plot line and over all the characters' psychological development. Three or four paragraphs are largely enough for that. I've just read a story where the endless sex scene was going on, and on, and on, and started again when I thought with relief it was over...At the end, I was in a state of near catalepsy. (I must add it was badly written and totally out of character, with all the cliches known in the universe). You may think I must have dropped it but my rule is to always complete what I have begun. Sometimes I can't, but I do it with the short stories.

By the way the title of Jaicen's story on AO3 is: "Doyle & Bodie; Beginnings".

It's certainly on AO3 for a while since it's already on my Kindle and i have read it long ago. It's also in the Prosfic (gen) archive. Jaicen is a true master in action stories, no doubt.

Thanks for the rec! Good choice. Jaicen is multi-talented in both fiction and vids.
