Doyle & Bodie - Beginnings by Jaicen5 (PG)
Fandom: THE PROFESSIONALS
Pairing: Bodie/Doyle
Length: 34,000 words
Author on LJ:
jaicen5
Author Website: As far as I can see, only on LiveJournal. ETA Found it at last! On AO3
Why this must be read: When I started making my list of the stories and authors I wanted to rec for the van, Jaicen was high up on my must-haves. So I was shocked, shocked I tell you, when I searched the van from stem to stern and could find no sign of a previous rec for her - I may have missed it, but blowed if I could find one.
Mates who know my love of slash will be checking for the pod and reaching for the garlic, because 'Beginnings' is gen... but to quote Jaicen, 'You could call it gen. I just call it a story.' For me, it's gen at its best: exciting, true to the lads on the screen, crackling with chemistry... and wonderfully nice and long. It's the kind of story to curl up with on the sofa on a dark wet night and lose yourself in.
As you can guess from the title, it's Jaicen's take on how the lads came to join CI5 - their recruitment, meeting, partnering. They get off to a rough start, but the partnership and the beginnings of friendship are being born in front of your eyes. Jaicen writes as though writing for the screen, and although there's plenty of action, there's nothing rushed or snatched about her writing. If you haven't read this before, and whether you prefer slash or gen, I promise you'll enjoy it. Or you can spank me *g*

Great rec, thank you!

I know! It might be I'm going daft (hush!) but I can't see anything for her except a vid rec. I love her writing style, and I wanted to throw in at least one completely gen rec during the month, so it was a bonus to find I had so much of hers to choose from *g*

So glad you chose this story!

Thank you! And I so agree. I'm easily drawn by fics that are slashy/cracky/fun, but sometimes I want to read something that has the emphasis on the plot and the action, and Jaicen's stories are perfect. She really writes the lads as they are on the screen, only more so - more consistently, perhaps?
And yay! for your Kindle! Though I love proper paper books, I adore the way the Kindle and other e-readers are freeing people to read what they want and where - it's brilliant. Happy reading!

Carry on crackvan-ing! I'm enjoying this.

I've spent the afternoon trailing my godmother round various hospital waiting rooms, armed with a paperback copy of American Gods to keep me company. Have you seen the size of that thing? I have one arm longer than the other now, and buying a Kindle has moved smartly up my to do list. *g*
I'm so pleased you're enjoying my crackiness! *blows kisses*

I love the slash, and don't think I'll ever get jaded, but I do understand what you mean.
I'm not that well-read in Pros (despite the years I've been reading *g*), so there may well be some wonderful stories of the kind you're after that I simply haven't stumbled over yet. I guess that's part of the fun though - never knowing what you'll come across. Good luck with your hunt!

I still read slash but enjoy it only when the sexual moves have some relevance to the plot line and over all the characters' psychological development. Three or four paragraphs are largely enough for that. I've just read a story where the endless sex scene was going on, and on, and on, and started again when I thought with relief it was over...At the end, I was in a state of near catalepsy. (I must add it was badly written and totally out of character, with all the cliches known in the universe). You may think I must have dropped it but my rule is to always complete what I have begun. Sometimes I can't, but I do it with the short stories.
By the way the title of Jaicen's story on AO3 is: "Doyle & Bodie; Beginnings".

Sorry for the long delay!
Thanks for pointing out I had the title wrong - apparently I'm going daft as well as potty. Tragic!
I also managed to find Jaicen on AO3 too; I don't know why I often seem to fail at finding people on AO3, but thanks to you once I knew for sure she was there I managed to track her author page down.
Thank you for all your help.

Thank you! I thought I must have imagined seeing it on AO3, because I couldn't find it there. At least now I know I'm not going totally nuts.
She's brilliant at action stories, isn't she? And as for her vids... *g*
Thank you again - it's lovely when people take the trouble to add to my knowledge.
