Rock Happy by ArwenLune (PG-13)
Fandom: SGA & GENERATION KILL
Pairing: Gen
Length: 140k+
Author on LJ:
Author Website: Ao3
Why this must be read:
"You want to recruit me for what? You want me to go where?"
Sgt. Brad Colbert has been on a lot of strange missions, but this promises to be his most out there yet: Atlantis
Considering the tone of the two shows, this crossover seems like a strange and unlikely fit, but it manages to work if you look at it as borrowing one characters from one universe to better explore and explain another.
No background knowledge of Generation Kill is really needed for this fic. Basically, all one would need to know is the Marines from Generation Kill (the characters the show focused on were kind of like crazy but competent soldiers blindly led by incompetent officers into messy chaos) get recruited into the SGC for deployment to Atlantis. Most of the marines are scheduled to train for a month or so before deployment to get used to how SGC works, but Brad Colbert is assigned to fill an empty spot on an already existing AR team. Brad Colbert spends his first number of weeks on Atlantis learning how to settle in, finding a dynamic with his new teammates, experiencing the insanity and the culture shock of the Pegasus Galaxy, and writing home about it to his old Platoon Commander who's training with the rest of his friends back in the Milky Way.
Colbert, in this fic, surrounded by the original characters that make up his new team, really exists to provide a certain point of view that is experiencing Atlantis and all of the wider cultural universe the outpost exists in. There are explorations on the nature of the military structure on Atlantis (Marine isn't too happy at first about Air Force overlords) and the nature of how Marines are treated differently in SGC than in the real world, presence of women (both in Stargate and on base), culture clash with native Pegasus culture, and just the dangers and shocks that must come with living on Atlantis. All while Colbert tries to figure out how to settle into a vacated position on an already established team, figure out his relationships with his new team members, and waiting for his old friends to finish training.
It is a pretty long fic, and there are variations on pace and tone throughout. Not all of the 140k+ wordcount is absolutely riveting. But the fic really creates an interesting bottom-up perspective of a world we normally from the point of view of the characters commanding and running most of the action. It allows for some interesting world building to show what life is like for all the soldiers and grunts between the episodic action of the show, and really creates a culture for the environment that must exist.
