Those Who Wait (PG) by Naga
Fandom: YAMI NO MATSUEI
Pairing: none (maybe Tsuzuki/Touda implied)
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: unknown
Why this must be read:
Author summary - Tsuzuki Asato lay unconscious under Muraki's care, and the Shikigami prayed that he would call for one of them. But when he did, he chose the most unexpected of them all...
Shikigami fanfiction is not terribly common in the YnM fandom, but the characters have the potential to be just as complex and interesting in GenSouKai as they are in Meifu. This two-chapter fic has long been one of my favorites because it is a great character study of more than one of Tsuzuki's bonded shiki: the retelling of the end of the Kyoto arc, in which a devastated Tsuzuki attempts to suicide by calling Touda, whose fire has the power to kill even a shinigami. The summoning, seen through the eyes of Byakko and Suzaku, and the aftermath, from Touda's viewpoint, are detailed here in a way that brings new dimension to the characters and their relationships especially for those who have only seen the anime and have not had a lot of exposure to the shikigami as the manga readers have. Why would Touda respond to Tsuzuki's summons and his extreme request? What resonated between them that might have caused a Shikigami to (spoiler spoiler)? I like the added dimension this story gives to Touda, Byakko and Suzaku, especially for fandom newbies.
"The desperation of it resonated in [Touda], the unbearable pain cried out to him, and he rocked back as if hit with a physical blow as the past he thought he had left behind reached out for him with grasping claws.
End this. End this non-existence, this mockery of life. Let me cease to be than stay frozen in eternity of hell.
He had screamed them before, to the uncaring black emptiness that was his prison. Deep in the womb of the Palace, where even the memory of sunlight, the feel of wind brushing his scales, the fresh taste of cooling water in his tongue had faded and ceased to exist. Where the sole remaining thing left to feel was the burn of the enchanted manacles chaining his wrists, and the only sound left was the sound of his own cries. Even those had receded in time, and he wondered in passing moments of lucidity whether he had dreamed the sound of his own voice, whether he had cried out in reality or was merely remembering a time long before when he had still had a voice.
You released me from my prison. I can do no less than release you from yours."
