Applesauce by Paula Wilshe (G)

Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH
Pairing: None
Length: 3,692
Author on LJ: Not on LJ
Author Website: Paula Wilshe on the Starsky Hutch Archive
Why this must be read:

I'm not an h/c fan myself, but I've heard many a fan complain about being shortchanged in the SH 2-part episode, The Plague. One minute Hutch is hovering near death and Starsky is running all over creation to find a cure, and the next minute, Hutch has recovered, and he and Starsky are delivering Hutch's pretty doctor to the airport. After all that hurt, what happened to our comfort? Paula Wilshe's "Applesauce" gives us some of the moments we missed. Hutch, still hospitalized, is out of danger, but pretty sick. He asks Starsky for some cold applesauce to soothe his throat, partly hoping that Starsky will go home and finally get some sleep himself.

The fan who recommended this story to me said it was the fic that got her into the fandom, and I can see why. Because this simple story says more about S&H's relationship with each other and the people around them than many longer ones. It's not just about S&H's partnership and their profound friendship; it's about family, both biological and adopted. Reading Paula's story is like being dropped into a moment in the boys' lives; her dialog is so natural you can hear it, her characterizations just what you'd expect.

It was a pleasure to get reacquainted with this story and to get a chance to recommend Paula's works in general. She has 32 stories, both gen and slash, on the Starsky and Hutch archive. They're all we have left of her, but they're a treasure.

This is an amazing story by Paula. She captures their shorthand dialogue with finesse just like you would hear them on the screen. Paula is truly a treasure and is sorely missed.
