Paths I Fear to Tread by Cara Chapel (NC-17)
Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Fraser / Vecchio
Author on LJ:

Author Website: none to my knowledge
Why this must be read:
An epic Fraser/Vecchio (I figure we need one to balance all the epic Fraser/Kowalski's) that gives great Vecchio in particular. It is an AU or AR where Vecchio doesn't take the shot that prevents Fraser from running off with Victoria and what Vecchio will do to make things right afterwards and how his definition of 'what is right' changes although it remains wrapped up in Benny. Often Vecchio ends up being portrayed as a carbon-copy, homophobic, Italian goomba and people don't acknowledge that he has been consciously resisting that all his life most overtly by his choice to become a cop. Vecchio is a huge risk-taker in fighting his upbringing as seen by his accepting the Las Vegas undercover assignment so it always strikes me as very out-of-character to have him wallow in un-examined prejudice. Here Ray examines and fights and resists and Benny benefits.
Ray sighed, watching the cracked sidewalk under his feet. Nobody else might notice, but Ray Vecchio knew Benton Fraser better than anybody. Benny looked a lot more miserable now than he had just before he left with Victoria... and that was saying a lot. Sometimes Ray woke up sweating, convinced that if he called the Consulate he'd learn that Benny had gone. Again.
He didn't know how he would live with that.
So here he was, walking through the snow wondering how the hell he was ever going to work up enough courage to... well, try something. Make a move. Take the risk that Benny would knock him flat on his ass and leave him to live with the humiliation of what he'd tried to do. Take the risk that he wouldn't be able to go through with it. Take the risk of finding out that he didn't like it with a guy even if that guy was Benton Fraser. Take the risk that he'd love it, and then spend the rest of his life trying to cope with what everyone he knew thought of him for turning gay at thirty-five.
