The Sons of Durin by KivrinEngle (teen)
Fandom: THE HOBBIT (book and movie)
Pairing: Bilbo/Thorin
Length: 95,860 words in the main story, 50K in the side stories
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: http://archiveofourown.org/users/KivrinEngle
Why this must be read:
In this AU, Bilbo's a grocer in Linlithgow (a small city in Scotland), where two hungry lads with a "particular set of skills" arrive at his door and charm their way in, the rest of the family coming close behind. They need help finding evidence against Smaug is the Minister for the Environment who has confiscated their lands and branded them as terrorists, and Gandalf says that Bilbo can help them. So the outlaws take him on "a road trip with a slight kidnapping component" to see their home, and Bilbo agrees to help them. The rest is similar, a modern AU, related to but not exactly following the events of The Hobbit, so Mirkwood comes before Rivendell and the Ring is a USB stick.
There's an ensemble of increasingly sympathetic characters, and a brisk plot with entertaining twists. Kili and Fili are particularly nicely drawn. They set up the tropy situation wherein Bilbo must pretend to be in a relationship with Thorin and they grow to love each other. The side stories in Children of the Lonely Mountain fill in the Dwarves' lives and extend before, during and and after the main story. I particularly liked the insight into Bofur and Dori's lives, they're all bittersweet and wonderful.
Spoiler: (skip) Thorin gives up the Arkenstone, and everybody lives.
Note: the rating is Teen mostly for violence, there's barely kissing in the main story
