Why this must be read:

There's a whole strand of gender-bent hobbitfic and the most common is female Bilbo -- the idea that she'd be just as strong and clever as the male version. Which is great! Hobbitfic is low on women, and we need all we can get! Sometimes this works, a lot of times it turns into noticeable authorial self-insertion, a True Romance, or even a Mary Sue. There are few, though, that manage to show Bilba, Billa, or Beryl with believable thoughts, feelings and actions.

My favorite is rubynye's Berlyl, who sees her dear Dwarves with clear eyes, and allows Thorin to court her in a sensual way, playing with her breasts right through the mithril coat, in one of the most erotic sex scenes in fanfic lately.

Then the whole tone turns around;

"Biting her lip against weeping, steeling her spine against fear, she creeps hobbit-quietly through Erebor's lightless halls, to retrieve the Arkenstone, to relieve Bombur of his watch, to betray her beloved king for his own good."
