Why this must be read:

Let's start with a fic that deals with one of the core conflicts of the show--the fact that the two main characters can never touch each other--in a particularly interesting way. It slots in neatly with the show's peculiar take on life, death, and the difficulties which arise when the two are mixed. The original character serves to hold up a mirror to Ned, as the author shows us an encounter between two men who've detached themselves from the world for very similar and yet essentially different reasons. Chuck has a large role here, too, and her usual fearlessness is on full display. The whole thing has a lovely, quiet, melancholy flavor.

It was not like The Pie Maker to be boastful, but he had learned a few things from his experiences, having some small measure of power in the epic struggle between life and death.

"It's extraordinary!" Chuck would say, smiling at him knowingly, a wink always hiding just behind her eyes. "You're extraordinary. There's ordinary, and then there is you."

"I'm not," he would mumble, and then chide her for using too much cinnamon on a Spiced Apple Special.

But there were still certain things -- things that he seemed to know, and others didn't. Things he knew even before they happened. Things he could see and feel. The slight hitch in an old woman's breathing patterns as she passed away in her sleep and the anger still coiled up in the frame of a boxer knocked dead in a fight. The tears unshed in a brave father's last brief minute. The joy of a person that was hoping to be reunited with the already lost.

But there was simply no predicting Francis Franco Franklin -- or Phil, for short. Francis-slash-Phil was an unassuming man, with an unassuming life. In fact, only one thing assumed about him at all.

For Phil too knew a little something about the tenuous line between this world and the next.
