Proof of Life by Keiko Kirin (T)
Fandom: PERSON OF INTEREST
Pairing: Harold Finch/John Reese
Length: 2282 words
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: AO3
Why this must be read:
I knew the name of this author from another small fandom: Wiseguy. She wrote great characterization and excellent prose and thus this was one of the first fics I read when I discovered Person of Interest fandom. It's a gut-grabbing fic, where Reese has been kidnapped by some bad guys and doesn't know how he's going to get out of the situation. Thus, it has the kind of stuff I love -- physical jeopardy for our hero, potential hurt/comfort and a man's partner coming to his rescue.
The author's summary says, What he needed was Finch's cavalry coming to the rescue. Except. Oh, yeah. He was Finch's cavalry.
We are dropped right into the middle of a tense situation. Ex-CIA operative John Reese is trapped and though he's talking, as usual, to Harold Finch, his billionaire recluse employer, we find out quickly that he doesn't have his ear piece at the moment and thus he's speaking mainly to himself, trying to stay alert and alive. He's been grabbed by bad guys and with his hands cuffed behind him, locked into a coffin-like box... somewhere. Reese is a pretty tough guy, but Kieko doesn't make him either too tough or too weak in this fic. He's trying to keep his head even though he figures he might not make it out of the situation alive.
She also explores the oft-referenced theme of the show, of the near constant communication between Reese and Finch. Their bond is strengthened by their phone link, and while at first it seemed somewhat intrusive to Reese, he's learned to appreciate and enjoy their ability to remain in touch with each other.
How annoying it'd seemed at first, especially with the earbuds: Finch's metronomic nasal intonation embedded in his ear. In his head. Under his skin. When it had changed from annoying to familiar, Reese couldn't recall. Now, not so much familiar as necessary. Like his daily cup of coffee, like opening his eyes to another dawn: Finch's voice as a reminder that he was alive and had a purpose.
It won't spoil the reader to know that Finch does find Reese and the resulting rescue is written with restrained warmth and a sense of relief. The author keeps the characters true to canon as Finch tells Reese that their number has apparently been killed by the same baddies that captured Reese. Though she doesn't go into full detail and make it a true case fic, the author shows us how Reese deals with this and how Finch surprises him, again keeping to the truth of the characters and the show's universe.
This was written early on in the show's first season -- before the episode "Number Crunch" in which Reese is nearly fatally shot by his former CIA handler and where we really saw Finch's devotion to him, but I think it works beautifully as a possible case we didn't see nevertheless. Thus, it's a great introduction to the show, the fandom and the fanfic for Person of Interest.
I'm so happy to be able to drive the van for Person of Interest in this final month of our beloved Crack Van community and will be bringing you as many recs as I can during my time.
