A World Without by kaydee falls (PG-13)
Fandom: LORD OF THE RINGS
Author website: lasciatemi cantare
Author on lj:
kaydeefalls
Pairing: Merry/Pippin implied
Rating: PG-13
Why this must be read:
Five snapshots of Pippin's life from pre-quest through to RoTK as he considers what the world would be like without Merry. This is an absolute gem of a story; it's all very well taking 20,000 words plus to describe what the hobbits mean to each other but being able to do it convincingly in so few words? Much more difficult. This rings true as the author works through all the different roles that Merry plays in Pippin's life; one or two are funny, another is sweet and still another is almost painful. Pippin has grown up between each of the snapshots - he's literally caught at moments during his maturation.
I highly, highly reccommend this story. It's very short and rewards rereading.
You occasionally imagine a world without Merry. You expect that your older cousin often imagines a world without you, as well. You do not remember the first time you met Merry, but Merry certainly remembers the first time he met you.
"You were small and smelly, and you cried all the time," Merry mutters grumpily. "And now it's been seven years, and you haven't changed a bit."
