Walking in the Dark by Tiranog (Explicit)
Fandom: PERSON OF INTEREST
Pairing: Harold Finch/John Reese
Length: 16294 words
Author on LJ:
tiranog
Author Website: http://tiranog.southroad.com/, AO3
Why this must be read:
If you're looking for a nice, long character driven first time story, this is it.
Tiranog is an experienced fanfic author that I've known in many a fandom and I was delighted to see her find Person of Interest last summer. She has written three fics so far, including a sequel to this one, and I hope more are on the way. Both she and I come from fanzines and are used to writing longer fics than are often seen these days. While nothing is wrong with the shorter forms, it's lovely to find the detail and characterization in a longer piece. Also, Tiranog lived in New York for most of her life so her feel for the city as Reese and Finch move through it is seamless and realistic.
In this story, Reese asks Finch to accompany him to a baseball game after a case concludes and to his suprise, his very private employer accepts. They have an enjoyable time and head off to dinner following the game, accompanied by Bear. There are a lot of fics in this fandom that deal with Finch knowing everything about Reese while Reese knows far less about Finch and this one touches on the issue as well, with Reese telling Finch that he's become okay with the disparity in their knowledge. He knows neither of them have anyone to spend down time with socially and he feels a deepening friendship for Harold, so mostly just teases him with questions just for fun and not really to learn his deepest secrets. It's not until they are unlocking the door to the library at the end of the evening, that Reese realizes that Finch has deeper feelings for him than Reese expected.
When he realizes that Finch desires him, Reese's heart responds. He feels unworthy of Finch because of the horrible things he's done, but...
All he wanted to do was melt against Harold and hold on, to let Harold connect him back to what he'd lost when he'd chosen to walk in the dark all those years ago.
Finch feels somewhat unworthy himself, due to the injuries that Reese doesn't really know much about at this point. Fandom speculated for two years before finding out what caused Finch's limp and stiff neck and still didn't learn all of the details, so with canon not giving us everything, authors are free to make him more or less scarred or handicapped or, as he would say himself, handi-capable. Tiranog has chosen the more wounded route, but Reese doesn't have any problem with that and helps Finch realize that despite his injuries, they can be together. The love scene is delicate, tender and altogether satisfying.
I must apologize for having some engine trouble this month but I'm going to double up on recs to make up for lost time.
