Why this must be read: Sometime in Season 2, Michael makes everyone go to a Disco Night, ostensibly as a team-building exercise. Pam and Jim turn out to be an excellent couples-dance team, and then there’s a bit of drinking, and some angst, and some hope. [livejournal.com profile] sloanesomething makes quick, light, fun work of a premise and execution that could have easily been canonical.

They all line up for the Electric Slide, and Phyllis, who is surprisingly good, walks off with the award, a glittery plastic bracelet on cheap red ribbon like the new Olympic medals, and Jim is a little embarrassed for the emcee that has to hand those out day after day.

“Next,” the guy calls, “Couples Dance!”

“I call Pam!” yells Michael, and shoves past Oscar to get her.

Jim doesn’t feel sorry for him anymore.

He takes Meredith to the bar, and they order a round of Pepsis and some onion rings.

Jim loses the John Travolta Homage to some random guy, and he really really wishes he had found the disco pants in time.

There are beers on the tables now, and Pam is sitting down, her hands curled around a half-empty pilsner, and when he sits down he doesn’t look right at her, leans back and picks at the beers as if looking for his.

“What’s up?”

She looks up. “Oh. Nothing. I mean. Dancing with Michael.”

He winces. “Yeah. That must have been aw…some,” he amends as Michael walks by.

“Not as awesome as making Oscar and Kelly give up their medal because Michael insisted the judging was biased in favor of minorities.”

Jim closes his eyes. “No.”

“Yeah.”

“COUPLES DANCE!” the emcee hollers, and Jim wonders if they start serving him sooner than they start serving everyone else.

Michael turns from the dance floor, his shirt askew and his eyes gleaming, looks at them.

“Come on,” says Pam, and before he knows what she means she’s caught his hand in hers, and he stands up and follows her to the dance floor as if he’s reluctant.

“Stay strong, man,” says Ryan as he passes.

The Bee Gees start blaring, and Jim’s half-grateful and half-angry that the song is so fast, but when Pam grabs his hands he grins.
