I read an entire spectrum from epic literature-style genfic to smuttily smuttish smutsmutsmut and everything in between, depending on my mood. It's taken me a while to get used to rec'ing the more disturbing stuff in more public forums, especially het where the woman's on the bottom.
Driving this van, even for a few days so far, has made me confront a whole bunch of issues I didn't know I had, about rec'ing explicit stuff in a community where I don't already know most of the members and about how insecure I've felt about my skills at sharing the wonder of this fandom to people I've known from my more recent fandoms, most of which are US media slashfen.
I know I knew Ranma fandom from 1996-1998, even a bit of 1999, and I know my memory is pretty good. But I also know that I don't know what happened in the fandom from 1999-now, and I've been having trouble figuring out where the new fics are, where the discussion is happening, where the more veteran authors are congregating, where the new authors are congregating... if they are. Also, my own tastes have changed, and my reactions to stories are different now than they were when I first started putting together a list of my favorite Ranma stories.
I've discovered much more joy than I ever expected in researching answers to all of these questions, and tracking down and rereading in this fandom, too. *loves crack_van*
Wow, I'm babbling, huh?
You know, now I'm wondering if there shouldn't be a place for drivers to chatter to each other about this sort of meta-recs stuff. Like rest_stop or something. Hrm.
