Why this must be read:

The story of how Archie Kennedy didn't die in Kingston is a very popular one in Hornblower fandom. There's even a fanon abbreviation; LKU for Live Kennedy Universe. The majority of LKU stories focus on rewriting the ending of Retribution and going AU from the series after that point. Island Dream comes at the common story from a slightly different angle. Eight years after the events of Mutiny and Retribution Captain Horatio Hornblower, walks around a corner in Santa Cruz and runs headlong into a man he's never met with a face he never dreamed he'd see again.

In a shadowed turn of the narrow street, Hornblower collided with two
men exiting a doorway. Unprepared, he staggered back and slammed his
head onto the edge of a stone block projecting from the wall behind
him. The world swirled around him and his knees began to buckle.

"Quick, grab him, Dougal!"

Two strong arms levered him up and through a doorway into a dim
interior. A tenor voice cried out, "Cognac, por favore!" A
disorienting turn and he was lowered into a wooden armchair just
inside the door. A cup to his lips, a burning flow down his throat.
He coughed at its fire but the shock of the strong cognac cleared his
head a little.

He blinked and looked up but the face above him was silhouetted
against the light of the open door and he could not make out the
features. The man asked quietly, "Better?"

He blinked and gathered himself. ""Yes," but when he attempted to
rise, a firm hand on his shoulder held him in place.

"No, sit for a moment. And please accept my humble apologies. We
should have been looking where we were going."

"Not at all. If I had been paying attention…"

The man had moved to the side as Horatio spoke. As the light from the
doorway fell on Hornblower's face, the standing man suddenly stilled
as if frozen. Horatio raised a hand to shade his eyes against the
daylight. His heart seemed to stop. That face!

"Archie? Archie Kennedy?" The woozy feeling returned.

The man did not reply but his companion, just returning from the
street, did. "You are mistaken, sir." Horatio's eyes were drawn to
the speaker. "This is Captain Matthew Styles, master of the Jamaica
Wind. Out of Kingston."

Island Dream is a lovely hopeful story of two men discovering that sometimes life does give you a second chance to get it right. Her Archie and Horatio are both different men from the ones we see in the movies, they are older, a lot has happened in their lives but at heart they are the same and it doesn't take long for the distance of years to melt away.
