Hi all! I'm
estrella30 and I'll be providing the Due South crack here for the month of September.
When I looked in the memories section to see what had been recced here before, I was completely blown away to find that only 57 Due South stories have been recced on
crack_van. 57!! Out of - wow. LOTS of stories available.
Well, rest assured, by the end of September you people will have 12 more, and I'm starting off my stint with one of my absolute favorite Due South stories of all time.
See, the thing is, I'm not here to try and dig around and find stories you might have missed, or things you've never read before. If you haven't read something I'm reccing - wow! That's great! But I like to think of
crack_van more along the lines of, "Ok. I want someone to love Due South as much as I do. What do I give them to read that will make them love these guys, and this fandom as much as I do?" And that's pretty much how all of my recs are going to read. If you had only 12 stories to try and convince someone to come to Due South, what would they be?
Well, my first one would be Fall.
I swear, I remember the first time I read this story, getting to the end of it and immediately scrolling back to the top to reread it over and over again. It's Fraser dealing with the fact that he's in love with Ray, and all the little everyday things in life that persist in reminding of this fact. It's a man wearing a bracelet that reminds him of Ray. A bar with the word "turtle" in it. A Champion logo coaster. Subtleties that say so much more than saying something flat out.
And, of course, there's this mental picture:
They looked at a Lancer, an Accord, and two Honda Civics. Finally, Ray patted the second Civic. "This one," he said. He jammed the dipstick back into its slot and wiped his hands off on his jeans. "Oil's leaking, but I can fix that. Uh... brakes, alternator, battery okay. And there's 20,000 miles left on the timing chain." He looked at Fraser hard. "You sure you want a car?"
Ray had stripped down to a black tank top. He smelled of grease and sweat. There was a dark smudge across his shoulder.
"I'm sure, yes."
Uhm - wow.
The other thing about this story that gets me every time is the actual writing in it. The way Mia fits words together. The stark, bare simplicity in which she states something. It's all the more erotic for what she doesn't say, than what she does, and that, as someone who tries to write herself, just blows me away every time.
Fall is beautiful and lyrical and poetic. It's sad and funny and hot. It's a wonderful, perfect Due South story, and you must go read it (or reread it if that's the case,) right now.

I once begged for an icon, just like yours. Nobody made me one, so I had to make my own and it sucked. I :::heart::: your icon.
I missed your birthday!!!!!! *facepalms* That will be rectified. Oh, yes. It will.
Now, let me run away again in my short skirt and knee-high boots.
