This story is listed as "part one," but it works perfectly as a standalone. It's an outsider's view of an outsider; a bookstore clerk with her own problems makes up stories about her customers, and she can't help but wonder about Jack Bristow:
The mystery man was a high-ranking diplomat, still looking for the woman with whom he'd fallen in love on his first visit to America. He'd sworn long ago that he'd never love another. So obviously there would be no point in speaking to him.
