VID REC: Smallville - O Come O Come Emmanuel
Vidder: Luminosity
Musical artist: Von Trapp Children
Pairing: Clark/Lex
Vidder on LJ:
sockkpuppett
Vidder's Web site: Luminosity's Vidworks
Why this vid kicks ass:
Luminosity's vidding skill is well-known to fans, but when I wanted a last-minute vid rec (because I lost all my vids when my old PC died), I was still pleased to find a new Smallville vid. This is one made for Vividcon Auction 2004 for Bonibaru/
boniblithe, a con I wasn't fortunate enough to be able to attend, so I hadn't seen it.
Although Luminosity's other SV vid, Learning to Fly, is beautifully polished and visually appealing, the emotional impact of O Come O Come Emmanuel is powerful, and the fact that it's post-season 3 means it's more relevant to Clark/Lex fans.
Use of religious imagery has abounded in this series, and this version of the song lends a stately grace to the vid; the meditative tone and measured pace let the images sink deeply into the viewer's mind, and the song choice is perfect for the subject matter.
While I don't know all of Luminosity's reasons for making this vid (and I apologize if I am way off target), what stands out for me is the illustration of the break between Clark and Lex, and the epic rivalry that is inevitable for them. It's essential to make the villain as strong as you want the hero to be, and Lex is going to be a match for Superman. For many fans, a large part of the appeal of this show is seeing Lex's journey alongside Clark's, and I think this vid illustrates their divergent paths effectively. Ultimately, there's pain in store for them both from this relationship gone terribly wrong, and the vid shows Lex's growing obsession in a sympathetic way while underscoring the destructive nature of it.
If the definition of tragedy is that the results are catastrophic and inevitable, resulting from a flaw in the protagonist, I think it's a valid reading that Lex is the tragic hero of Smallville, the yin-yang match to Superman the Savior, wiser and purer than any human could be. Ironically, the one person Clark can't save is Lex, and oh, does that hurt.
