Why this MUST be read: A strong sense of place is one of my favorite things in a story and this piece has it, thick atmosphere, quirky characters and all the other things you need to really be sucked into a story. Plus, the characterization of JC is solid and feels right, but is also unique and very specific to this story. The relationship isn't exactly at the center of the story, but it's important and well-drawn. The way the surreal mystery magic ideas are worked into the realistic canon stuff is wonderful as well. The writing is full of gorgeous and haunting imagery, creating some moments in this story that stay with me to this day.
