Why this must be read: Because it's utterly adorable and real, and falls into a very rare category for good fanfiction: meta-commentary. Most storiess that try this come across as heavy-handed and trite, but this one is clever and charming.
The genesis of this story was a discussion of why there aren't more stories prominently featuring Gunn. One explanation is that a number of authors who may be inclined to write about him are worried about fetishizing him or otherwise being unintentionally offensive. These reactions are transferred to a hopelessly infatuated, neurotic Wesley. The story makes its point in a witty and insightful way without distorting any of the characters, and the resulting romance is sweet without being cloying.
