Don't you find it odd that it happened in Care of Magical Creatures, when we were studying flobberworms, and just now he asks you to skin his shrivelfig? Fate must have a penchant for phallic symbols—" She trailed off when she realized that both members of her audience were staring at her, agape.

"Hermione," Harry muttered, "can we not talk about this for awhile?"

"Please," Ron echoed fervently. "I don't fancy seeing my breakfast again so soon. Besides, isn't it like giving in to the dark side if we all gossip about Malfoy all the time?"

"He's a troubled boy," Hermione insisted. "Don't you see? This connects to all his terrible behaviour when he was younger! He was only misunderstood. I mean, just look at him!"

They looked. Malfoy was reclined in his chair, quite blissfully relaxed, watching his potion stir itself with the help of a well-placed charm. He looked, in short, like a prim, rich, spoiled boy who at any moment was liable to break out into a cruel smirk. He did not, not one bit, look like he was misunderstood.
