King of Infinite Space by Hossgal (R)
Fandom: FARSCAPE
Pairing: Rygel
Author on LJ:
leadensky
Author Website:
Why this must be read:
There has recently been a 'Rygelthon' on LJ that generated some much-needed high-quality fic for this crustily loveable old Hynerian. But way before this, Hossgal wrote the quite marvellous 'King of Infinite Space' - five separate and enthralling stories about Rygel in the 'five things that never happened to' vein.
Hossgal writes beautiful prose - full-stop, and end of story. She's an author with a definable style. Added to this, each small ficlet is taut and engrossing in the telling, and Hossgal doesn't short-change either Rygel's multi-faceted character or his keen intelligence.
King of Infinite Space
Late noon heat drew mist from the Pool of the Unnamed and lent the enriched waters an invigorating warmth. The halfling pod still clung to their infant tails. Most were unsteady on their new legs. Their restless tumbling squabbles churned the basin opaque. The weaker ones shrank to the water's edge, away from the steep drop and the feeding table anchored above it. The strongest and the cleverest jostled for a place on the platform edge, where both the Pool's heat and their ration's sweet temptations were at hand.
He was not the strongest, nor, quite, the cleverest, but he possessed sufficient portion of both to stand high in the halflings' ever-fluid rankings. The lower half of his body lay soaking in the flower-scented waters, as one hand clung to the table edge, the other employed in bringing another fistful of food to his mouth. High-ranking he might be, but he was always hungry. They all were. Hynerian yolk sacs burned off early - particularly among the royal families. Successful rearing required wealth sufficient to provide food for scores of hungry mouths.
The halfling knew none of this - he was too young to understand the adults' jumbled sounds as anything but noise, much less the history of his race. He did understand the threat from another, larger youth when both halflings laid hand on a particularly fine morsel of food. And he knew how to respond in kind.
