He can almost imagine he's spending his time with Jayne because he wants to, that he actually cares for the man; that Jayne's not liable to sell him out at any minute.

Wow! on both levels. I hadn't seen this story before, so a complete success in meeting crack_van's goals. And the story itself is a complete success in meeting fanfiction's goals--OK, we already know and care about the characters because of the show, but we want excellent fiction that tells us something we didn't know about the characters as human beings.
