Why this must be read:
Rebecca Wells is one of those characters that you want to hate for what she did to Danny, but can't quite bring yourself to truly dislike because just about everyone knows what it's like to be torn between two loves. And when she broke up with him to try and salvage her marriage to Steve Sisko, you get the feeling that as much as her leaving hurt Dan, she too was feeling more than little pain. Which is why it would have been so very hard for her to go see Dan after she was finally, properly divorced. Because how do you try and start over again with someone you should never have left in the first place?
The night after the day CSC was sold, Rebecca seeks Dan out to try and explain why she came back. Dan being Dan, he doesn't make it easy for her but she persists because she knows they could be good together if they just gave each other a break.
She can't believe that she's mad enough, dumb enough, nave enough to think he'll take her back, but why else has she come here? Why else would she be standing just inside the door of an unfamiliar bar, way out of her own neighbourhood, surrounded by jostling, half-drunk strangers, listening to music (if, she thinks again, you can call it that) that she can't stand? Why else, if not to swallow her pride, to try to win back the man she let go, the man whose heart she has every reason to believe she broke; a man who, she has every reason to believe, has every reason never to want to see her again, every reason not to trust her.
A.S. Lawrence has woven a quiet little tale of remorse and forgiveness. Her Rebecca knows she's done wrong, but she's hoping Dan will find it in himself to give her another chance. For his part, Dan isn't quite ready to let her totally off the hook, but he's open to suggestions and maybe they'll both come out it a lot happier than they did going in.
