Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl
Introduction
Once upon a time there was a little girl who loved pirates. One day she learned that there was going to be a movie based on Pirates of the Caribbean, and thus an obsession was born. She grew even more excited when she learned that the movie was going to star Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom, for who better to star in a pirate movie than Johnny Depp and the king of homoerotic subtext Mr. Orlando "Still the prettiest" Bloom? She waited patiently for the movie to appear with only occasional shouts of "Pirates! Pirates! Pirates!" to demonstrate her eagerness. Finally the day was upon her and she could not sit still in her movie seat and her brain stirred with fears that the movie would not be everything she hoped. Approximately 3 hours later she was heard to utter, "Why the hell didn't anyone tell me becoming a pirate was a legitimate career choice?" For the movie had been everything she could have hoped for. There had been homoerotic sword fights, rum, pirates in dresses, rum, mad gay pirates, rum, silly hats, rum, kick ass girl pirates, rum, cool villains, rum, evil monkeys, rum, hot gay pirates sex (well maybe not onscreen), and more rum. However, the vaguely disappointing ending and the lack of sex between the main characters led her running home to search for fic (and rum).
Plot:
In the interest of full disclosure of personal bias: Will + Jack + Elizabeth forever!!!
I have a feeling pretty much everyone has seen this movie at least once, but I'll give a brief sketch of the movie plot. I know I'm going to forget stuff, but I'll do my best.
As children, Elizabeth Swann helps rescue William Turner from a shipwreck. She notices that he is wearing a pirate medallion and she takes it from him to protect him from being accused of being a pirate.
Several years later Elizabeth is living with her father the governor and Will works as a blacksmith's apprentice. They are still friends and Elizabeth is obviously in love with Will though she is being pushed to marry a Navy officer named Norrington. At a big ceremony thingy Elizabeth falls over a wall into the ocean because her corset is too tight and is rescued by Jack Sparrow who is trying to steal a boat from two adorable Navy guys (more on them later).
Jack and Elizabeth flirt while Jack threatens her in order to try and get away from Norrington and the rest of the Navy guys. Jack attempts to hide in the smithy and when Will comes in they fall in love at first sight. Woo hoo! Sorry. They don't. They just rip of each other's clothes and have sex on the ground. Woo hoo!!! Well, not really. Jack does in fact caress Will's sword with his own. And I am not making that up. Um... so... They wave their swords at each other and flirt a lot. It's all very Princess Bride but I am not left handed either. Jack eventually wins, but of course doesn't kill his new boyfriend, runs off, and his eventually captured and thrown in jail.
Later the town is attacked by pirates (pirates! pirates! pirates!). Will fights bravely, but is knocked unconscious (poor boy gets hit on the head a lot). Elizabeth is attacked. The pirates show interest in the medallion she took from Will as a child. Elizabeth asks for parley (the word parley gets said a lot, along with the word Savvy, not as much as you would think from how often it appears in fics, but that's another story) and is brought to the pirate ship where she meets the evil pirate captain, Barbossa. She learns that the medallion thingy is very important to the pirates and is tricked into giving the medallion up and is kidnapped.
When Will wakes up and realizes that Elizabeth has been kidnapped he tries to get Norrington and Elizabeth's father to go after her, but they say it is impossible. What ever will Will do? Why go to his new boyfriend of course.
Will, using his crafty blacksmith skills, is able to free Jack. Jack is especially interested in Will because he learns that Will is the son of his friend Bootstrap Turner (and by friend, I mean pirate lover) and they steal a ship (by pretending to steal one ship, but then sneaking over to the other one, I can't really describe it well, but it's funny) to go off after Barbossa and Elizabeth.
Elizabeth meanwhile is learning that Barbossa and the rest of his pirate crew are cursed and whenever the moon comes out they turn into skeletons. Barbossa really misses eating apples and has a monkey that is also cursed. On his crew are the fabulous Pintel and Ragetti who act like an old married couple and are a matched pair for the Navy guys that Jack had tricked earlier (a homoerotic thematic structure, people, I'm in heaven).
Elizabeth learns that the only way the pirates can undue the curse is if they return all of the cursed goal and spill the blood of the person who originally took the gold, which they think she has (more on that later).
Will and Jack are on their way to Tortuga to get a crew for their ship. They are alone on a ship with nothing to do. I'm just saying. Jack is drunk and obnoxious. Will tries to pretend he doesn't like it. He does a bad job. Jack is a pirate. He thinks pirates are cool. Will claims to hate pirates. But his father was in fact Bootstrap Bill, a friend of Jack's and a pirate. Will Will be able to get over his pirate hatred, come to turns with the memory of his father, and embrace the pirate within? Oh the angst!
Here is where I give up trying to detail the plot. It just gets too confusing with all the lying, cheating, and stealing. Basically Jack, Will, and Elizabeth take turns rescuing each other in every possible combination.
Will is afraid that Jack doesn't really love him and is just using him to get his ship back from Barbossa. Jack also gets slapped by women a lot (insert your own joke about exactly why they are slapping him). Most notably by Anamarie, a kick ass pirate chick that joins his crew.
Barbossa and his crew need Will's medallion and Will's blood because Bootstrap Bill is the one who initially triggered the curse. We also find out that Barbossa was Jack's first mate and mutinied against him and stranded him on an island with a gun with only one bullet. Jack vowed to get his ship back and use the one bullet in the gun to kill Barbossa.
At one point Jack and Elizabeth are stranded on an island together. They drink rum and flirt a lot. We never find out what happens. In the morning, Elizabeth burns all the rum supposedly to signal passing ships to come rescue them. The conversation that occurs when Jack finds out that Elizabeth has burned the rum is one of the funniest things ever:
Jack Sparrow: Stop! No, not good! What are you doing? Not Good! You're burning all the food, the shade... the RUM!
Elizabeth Swann: Yes, the rum is gone.
Jack Sparrow: Why is the rum gone?!
Elizabeth Swann: One, because rum is a vile drink that turns even the most respectable men into complete scoundrels. Two, that signal is over a thousand feet high. The entire royal navy is out looking for me; do you really think that there is EVEN the slightest chance that they won't see it?!
Jack Sparrow: But why is the rum gone?!
Whatever Elizabeth. Don't blame the rum.
Eventually everyone ends up in one place for a big final battle. Elizabeth agrees that she will marry Norrington if they are allowed to go back and rescue Will and Jack. Jack takes one of the cursed gold coins so he becomes a skeleton too and has a big huge fight with Barbossa. Will, who after some trust issues and stupidity, seems to have made up with Jack and is able to reverse the curse at the exact right time by returning all the coins and dropping blood on them. Jack kills Barbossa. Bye bye evil dude.
Sadly, the Black Pearl has already left so Jack is captured by Norrington and brought back to be hung. At the hanging, Will appears wearing a hat that is gayer than Legolas's ears and is able to rescue Jack. They try and fight their way free. They are very coordinated and seem very good at communicating with their eyes. I wonder why. Eventually they are surrounded by soldiers. Will yells at Norrington and the following conversation occurs:
Norrington: You forget your place, Turner.
Will Turner: It's right here between you and Jack.
(and slashers around the world cheer)
Elizabeth Swann: As is mine.
(and slashers around the world yell "Shut Up Elizabeth!!!... Oh wait! Threesome! Carry on!")
Jack tries to make a dramatic exit by saying that things would never work out between himself and Elizabeth, compliments Will's very gay hat, and then falls into the ocean to reunite with the Black Pearl and his crew. Will and Elizabeth kiss, but most notably do not run off to become pirates with Jack. Bad Will! Bad Elizabeth! I guess there is always the sequel.
Characters:
Jack Sparrow: I cannot even begin to adequately describe this character. Johnny Depp is brilliant. He has said in interviews that he modeled Jack after Keith Richards and considers Pirates to be the rock stars of the 18th century. Jack is drunk and Jack is crazy, but you can never be sure how much of it is an act. He also has sexual chemistry with every single person and object in the movie.
Will Turner. Oh Orlando Bloom. How I love you. You are an elf, a pirate, and will soon be appearing in the movie Troy. I honestly don't think it is possible for an actor to find more homoerotically charged roles as you have found. Go you! Will is earnest, adorable, and not really all that bright, but we love him anyway. He makes pretty swords and he loves Elizabeth and Jack. His father was Jack's old friend Bootstrap Bill.

Elizabeth Swann: She's pretty, can kick ass, loves pirates, and hates rum and corsets. She loves Will and though she would won't admit it, Jack too. Played by Keira Knightley.

Captain Barbossa: A nice Shakespearean style villain. The curse prevents him from enjoying all the things a pirate should. No drinking, no eating, no carousing and he really, really misses eating apples. Geoffry Rush is the bomb diggity.

Norrington: I will admit to not being a Norrington fan. I just don't see the appeal, but there are a lot of Norrington fans out there and more power to them. He's polite and doesn't like pirates (perhaps the man protests too much). He loves Elizabeth, but is able to let her go when he realizes that she doesn't love him back. And he wears a silly wig.

This was a funny, funny movie and I can't resist including some of the funniest lines.
Barbossa: First, your return to shore was not part of our negotiations nor our agreement, so I must do nothin'. And secondly, you must be a pirate for the Pirate's Code to apply, and you're not. And thirdly, the Code is more what you'd call "guidelines" than actual rules. Welcome aboard the Black Pearl, Miss Turner.
Will Turner: You cheated!
Jack Sparrow: [shrugs] Pirate!
Mr. Gibbs: Then, on the fourth day, he roped himself a couple of sea turtles and made a raft.
Will Turner: He roped himself a couple of sea turtles.
Mr. Gibbs: Aye. Sea turtles.
Will Turner: What did he use for rope?
Jack Sparrow: [from beside them] Human hair.
[pause]
Jack Sparrow: From my back.
Jack Sparrow: We've reached a special place... spiritually... ecumenically... grammatically.
Elizabeth Swann: Captain Barbossa, I am here to negotiate the cessation of hostilities against Port Royal.
Barbossa: There be a lot of long words in there, miss. We're naught but humble pirates. What is it that you want?
Elizabeth Swann: I want you to leave and never come back.
Barbossa: I'm disinclined to acquiesce to your request. Means "no."
Will Turner: Where's Elizabeth?
Jack Sparrow: She's safe, just like I promised. She's all set to marry Norrington, just like she promised. And you get to die for her, just like you promised. So we're all men of our word really... except for Elizabeth, who is in fact, a woman.
Jack Sparrow: Who makes all these?
Will Turner: I do! And I practice with them three hours a day!
Jack Sparrow: You need to find yourself a girl mate. Or perhaps the reason you practice three hours a day is that you already found one, and are otherwise incapable of wooing said strumpet. You're not a eunuch are you?
Barbossa: Who are you?
Jack Sparrow: No one. He's no one. Aunt's nephew's cousin twice removed on my mother's side. Lovely singing voice. Eunuch.
Jack Sparrow: Where's the medallion?! Ah, where's dear William?
Elizabeth Swann: Will!
Will Turner: Elizabeth!
Jack Sparrow: Monkey!
Jack Sparrow (to Will): Do us a favor...I know it's difficult for you...but please, stay here, and try not to do anything...stupid.
Jack Sparrow: Me? I'm dishonest, and a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest... Honestly. It's the honest ones you want to watch out for, because you can never predict when they're going to do something incredibly...stupid.
Will Turner: She goes free!
Barbossa: What's in your head, boy?
Will Turner: She goes free.
Barbossa: You've only got one shot and we can't die.
Jack Sparrow: Don't do anything stupid!
Will Turner: You can't.
[points gun at his own throat]
Will Turner: I can!
Jack Sparrow: Like that.
Jack Sparrow: You, sailor!
Mr. Gibbs: Cotton, sir.
Jack Sparrow: Mr. Cotton. Do you have the courage and fortitude to follow orders and stay true in the face of danger and almost certain death?
[Pause.]
Jack Sparrow: Mr. Cotton! Answer, man!
Mr. Gibbs: He's a mute, sir. Poor devil had his tongue cut out, so he trained the parrot to talk for him. No one's yet figured how.
Jack Sparrow: Mr. Cotton's... parrot. Same question.
Parrot: [squawk] Wind in the sails. Wind in the sails.
Mr. Gibbs: Mostly, we figure, that means 'yes.'
Fic Pairings:
Obviously this fandom is really new and a bit disorganized, but there is some good stuff out there. Jack/Will is definitely the most popular pairing, but I've also seen a lot of Jack/Elizabeth, and there is a whole group of devoted Norrington folks who usually pair him with Jack or Elizabeth. My favorite pairing is Jack/Will/Elizabeth and I am forever searching for good threesome fics. There is are also a lot of Jack/Bootstrap fics.
Parings of all shapes and sizes:
