Why this must be read:

The first thing he does is call Brian. The second thing is does is call Brian. The third thing he does is call Brian, but Brian doesn't answer and keeps it up, too, so it's twenty minutes standing on the curb, biting his lip and trying not to cry, before he decides what to do next.

Brian and Michael aren't together, post season one. For a story that doesn't actually have any interaction between the two characters, Flesh does a good job of pointing out how they'd managed to move away from each other--or rather, how Brian had moved away from Michael, forcing him to grow apart too--by the end of the first season. It doesn't seem like it was that long, really, between the time they couldn't go a night without seeing each other and the time they could.
