Why this must be read: There are so many what-if's in the Sentinel. The first, most basic one is this: what if Blair didn't find Jim in the hospital? Usually when authors choose this what-if, Jim suffers for it. After all, when we see him in the pilot episode, he's pretty far gone. Helpless, in pain, zoning at dangerous moments. If Blair doesn't find him and help him, the logical conclusion is a whole new level of misery for Jim.

But this story takes another route, a different assumption. Jim made it through the Switchman case without falling apart, though he's having the first symptoms he's not yet in need of rescue. He is, however, in need of chilling out - at least the department shrink says so. He's sentenced to take yoga classes - it's either that or volunteering with grade-school kids. And guess who is teaching?

The Blair in this rings true; he's strong and athletic, very physical, and still spiritual. He seems somehow more mature than Blair was at this point in the series, calmer and more in control of himself. But the irrepressible spirit still comes through. Jim is left with more of his dignity as well, he doesn't need to be torn apart before he's ready for Blair, unlike in the series. The attraction is mutual even before the sentinel thing is revealed.
And then there's the sex - not too graphic, not a porn story grafted onto the end of a romance. But very nice mental images of just what true flexibility can allow. The rating of NC-17 was listed by the author, but I would take it down a bit, maybe to R.
