Ghost Stories by Cortese (G)
Fandom: HORATIO HORNBLOWER
Pairing: slight Horatio/Archie
Author on LJ:
tanacawyr
Author Website: http://www.io.com/~cortese/stories/
Why this must be read:
Set within a missing gap of time in "The Duchess and the Devil," after the rescue mission in the storm but before Horatio's decision to return to Ferrol, this is really a story about homecoming. When the survivors of the rescue mission come aboard the Indefatigable, it is the first time Archie Kennedy has been at sea in over two years.
tanacawyr captures perfectly the sense of isolation and profound culture shock Archie experiences upon returning to the crowded and bustling ship. That sounds so simple, but this story is far from that; it's moody and atmospheric and
tanacawyr's prose is simply stunning. The scent and sound and feel of the ship, the feather-light feeling of a dream, all are rendered to perfection to create a story that is hauntingly beautiful.
