Why this must be read: Seth goes to college in Boston and comes to a realization about what he's left behind. I loved the description of college life: the sadistic R.A., the horrid weather, the alternaboys and girls.

An excerpt:

Cold is to be expected he hears, but then he also hears that there is nothing to be expected because it is impossible to expect, really, about the weather here. He learns this the first time it really snows. It is sixty degrees when Seth leaves the dorm and he sports only a sweater. When he is walking back from class (Calculus, which is mandatory and infuriating especially for Seth who is, at the moment, an English major by default because his father wants him to be a lawyer but Seth is a horrid liar,) and all of a sudden these small heavy things start pelting down on his delicate college boy skin and he sneezes and looks up and it is snowing. Seth knows it is snow because he has seen many Christmas specials and because Josh Binswanger (AHA AH HA HA. Ahem,) on the WB 10:00 news (It’s 10:00. Do you know where YOUR children are?) had predicted this. Seth is kind of giddy in a first timer way. He sticks out his tongue but all he tastes is exhaust fumes from the 39 bus going by and two guys who might be hockey players (locals, he can tell from the way they scrunch down and take the amazing-ness of this flurry for granted. And by the gratuitous use of retard in the one sentence he hears,) stare like they expect him to burst into song, if raindrops were gumdrops…
