Escaping Sorrowful by Gypsybird (NC-17)

Why this must be read:

Another one of my top three QAF writers, Gypsybird's stories are always well-written and an excellent excuse to procrastinate doing any (home)work you might have. This story, in particular, is a fond staple of my Brian/Michael readings - an extreme AU spin-off, Escaping Sorrowful paints an intriguing picture of two young strangers who meet in a different place, under difficult circumstances. The plot is, to be honest, somewhat predictable and slightly implausible at certain parts, this weakness is more than compensated by the author's ability to sustain a moody, gritty 'believability' to the bleak little world of Sorrowful; a kind of oppressive, suffocating coldness to the town that can feel all too familiar these days, and which serves as a stark contrast to the little niche of color and happiness that her characters seek to carve for themselves. Definitely make yourself check this classic oldie out if you're a Brian/Michael fan, and look out for more of her other stories (the current WiP 'Full Circle' is especially worth waiting for!).

Michael felt the grind of the rough pavement beneath his cheek, and the caress of snow, whispering down in fine flakes, to melt into chilling wetness against his already cold skin. His stomach churned painfully, feeding on itself in the absence of food. Acid bitterness stung the back of his throat. He squeezed his eyes shut and prayed for sleep to come.

His prayers were not answered. Every little noise brought him jerking back to wakefulness, despite his exhausted state. He heard the occasional whoosh of a car passing by, though there were not many at this late hour. Some distance away, two cats were fighting. Beyond that, he heard the chime of breaking glass, and voices raised in anger.

He sighed, pulling the thin blanket up over his ears miserably. Then his senses sharpened as he heard footsteps nearby. Heavy, booted, more than one set. Michael cringed back even further into the corner of the alley. Who was coming? Would they see him? Would they be friend, or foe? Adrenaline washed through him, and his palms were clammy with the sudden sweat of fear. . .

“Ahh!” Michael jerked awake, slamming bolt upright and looking around anxiously. His rapid, shallow breathing roared through his ears, and his heart was beating so hard he could feel it all through his body. For a terrifying moment he didn’t know where he was. Then, as his panic receded, and his mind cleared, he remembered. He was indoors, warm, and well fed. He was safe.

Michael exhaled in shaky rush and curled back down onto the small sofa. He could hear Brian softly snoring in the other room, and a smile touched the corners of his mouth. For this one night, he wasn’t alone in the world. Sleep descended to claim him again, and he slept peacefully until dawn.
