Why this must be read: Current comics continuity has shown us just what Magneto can do with a little power (say, sovereignty over the entire nation of Genosha?), but this fic talks about what Magneto can do with the world.
So we all know that Magneto has it in him to take over the world, and that he feels it's neccessary to do so in order to ensure the future of the mutant race. Let's skip past all those fascinating stories in canon where the X-Men stop him and get to the future. The future where Magneto won and has instituted his own brand of world order.
Don't say anything, don't do anything, don't even think anything that steps out of line with the system, or the system will reach out and destroy you. Poi proves to the audience that Magneto would have exactly what it takes to break down the cohesion of normal social interaction and replace it with either reverance or fear. Then in one more stroke shows you that even in the darkest times there is hope.
These stories play out like one of the better What If? comics of yesteryear (cause let's admit to ourselves, the most recent What If? with the X-Men, was not up to snuff Marvel). What If... Magneto succeeded in taking over the world? It sets up the universe in all it's bleak glory and then let's us know it's not all that bad. It's the perfect What If?.
