I loved the premise for this fic, but when I started reading it, I was put off by writing that seemed kind of flat. Does it improve? Is it something you stop noticing because of the great plot and characterization?

Yes. The dialogue is snappy and the story is entertaining. There are some OOC moments but for the most part this is well done.
