Why this must be read:
There are some stories that stay with you. The characters are dead on and pointed, the scenes are vivid, the sex is hot. There are phrases and images from this series that have kept fresh in my mind, to the point that I worry about slipping some day and thinking they're mine -- not that I write plot or sex like this. These qualify as classics.

"An Uncommon Want" is the third story in the Interlunation series , following "Interlunation" and "Those Who Trespass." The first follows the double quickening scene in Revelations 6:8 (scorching Methos/Duncan); the second occurs during Forgive Us Our Trespasses (delightful Amanda/Methos, Methos/Duncan, Amanda/Methos/Duncan); and this one begins in the bar at the end of The Modern Prometheus. From there, it goes on a road trip into Methos and Duncan's pasts, and picks up the life of Warren Cochrane. There are a few passing but impressive OC's along the way, as well.

If you've somehow missed reading these, or if you're poking your nose into the fandom, definitely give all three a try. I'm rec'ing this one in particular because it's the longest and most complete. Trust me, you'll love the sequence in the bar.

"I did what I thought was right," Duncan said, crossing his arms across his chest, his mouth set.

"I see," Methos said, leaning on the back of the couch, very close to Duncan's shoulder. "You killed Byron because he did something that offended your moral code," he said softly. "You killed him. But when Warren Cochrane begged you, begged you to take his head, you let him live."

"It wasn't the same," Duncan said.

"No? Do you want to know the only difference I see?" Methos asked, placing both hands firmly on the back of the couch near Duncan's broad shoulders, bracketing him.

"What?" Duncan replied quietly, as if he didn't really want to know.

"Cochrane was your lover, Byron was mine," Methos hissed in his ear.

I read this story many years ago when it first came out and I had only been reading fanfic for a few months. It is still to this day one of my all-time favorite (desert island) stories. Great rec.

Also, your plot and sex scenes aren't bad either :-)
