"The Melding Series" by Karo (NC-17)

Why this must be read: I've chosen to begin with a story from Battlestar Galactica 1978, because Starbuck and Apollo are one of those classic slash pairings, like Kirk/Spock. They just fit together in the most delicious ways, especially when it's Karo who's fitting them together...
"The Melding Series" is, in many ways, typical of my favourite stories in this fandom. It's long, funny and angsty by turns, full of melodrama, and best of all, it's a romantic friendship fic (which is a particular kink for me). Apollo and Starbuck are adorably frustrated at first, until they finally get a clue about where they want their friendship to go, long after everyone else has figured it out.
This story also contains one of my all-time favourite scenes in a BSG fic, in which Apollo is asked difficult questions about Starbuck by the Inter-Fleet Broadcaster. I snicker every time I read it. Karo has also come up with many delightful space-operatic euphemisms for sex, such as the "The Turbo Hum," "Painting the Hull," and the "Throttle-Back." As if all that wasn't enough, there's one-upmanship though card games, which, frankly, is almost enough just on it's own to get me to read a fic.
