Yes, yes, yes! We are there yet!

I don't know about you, but I'm a bit boggled. When I set out with the crazy idea of reccing a vid every single day this month, I wasn't entirely sure we'd make it this far. But here we are. The very last rec of this monster set!

The really scary thing is that I could have kept right on reccing for a while yet before running out of good small fandom or multi-fandom songvids. There are just so many awesome vidders out there, and I hope this set has given you some inkling of the amazing quality and range of their work.

Anyway, enough from me. I hope you've all enjoyed the trip as much as I have. Happy new year!

Why this vid kicks ass: Was there any other songvid I could have ended the set with? I think not. This is the ultimate vid about vidding. It's sharply edited, it's funny, it has all our favourite characters doin' their thang... but most of all, it's a celebration of the grassroots, newfangled awesomeness of songvids.

Tasty too! ;)

30th-Mar-2005 04:31 pm "The Revenant Series" by Anna Orr (NC-17)
Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 1978
Pairing: Starbuck/Apollo

Author Website: Apollolover
Why this must be read: I've decided to finish off my BSG78 recs with an old, well-read and much-loved favourite...

The Revenant Series )

While I wouldn't call this a death fic, it might be considered so by some people; it's also an AU.

Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 1978

Why this must be read: Syble's "Vindiciae" is short but charming, with just the barest hint of my favourite kink (which I won't reveal, as it will spoil the story).

23rd-Mar-2005 02:10 pm "Warrior of the Sectar" by Anna Orr (NC-17)
Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 1978
Pairing: Starbuck/Apollo
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] annaorr
Author Website: Apollolover
Why this must be read: This story is structured as a simple, one-shot joke: it builds tension to an unbearable pitch and then hits us with a punchline. I admire this very much, as a joke structure, in fiction, is one of the most difficult forms to write well. But this is Anna, so there was never any doubt that "Warrior of the Sectar" would be a beautifully constructed story. As an added bonus, it's damn hot as well.

One note before you click on the link: don't be put off by the mock formality of the first section of the story--just go with it.

Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 1978
Pairing: Starbuck/Apollo
Author on LJ: None
Author Website: Apollolover
Why this must be read: No rec-set from a fandom in a science-fictional universe would be complete without an "aliens made us frack" story. This is Heidi's take on it, and "Last Night" is simply told, but full of love.

Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 1978
Pairing: Starbuck/Apollo
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] damerel

Why this must be read: Sometimes, there's no substitute for angst and hot sex and men in tight leather pants. You will find the recommended daily requirement of these things in Jen's delightful "No Sanctuary."

Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 1978
Pairing: Starbuck/Apollo
Author on LJ: None
Author Website: Apollolover
Why this must be read: The premise of "Stranded" is typical enough: Apollo and Starbuck are temporarily "castaway on a planet." What makes this story special is that beneath the banter and sex, we get a glimpse of societal pressures and the roles people are expected to play in the tiny, suffocating environment of the Fleet. The end result is a story that is still as hot and enjoyable as you'd expect from HeidiM, but with a slightly gritty feel underpinning everything, and that's the aspect I enjoy most.

17th-Mar-2005 01:13 pm "The Adjective List, or The Courtship of Boxey's Father" by Karen (PG-13)
Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 1978
Pairing: Starbuck/Apollo
Author on LJ: None
Author Website: Utterly Different
Why this must be read: Boxey plays matchmaker for his dad, with mixed, but highly amusing, results. Karen somehow manages to find something fresh, and quite adorable, to add to this well-used idea.

Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 1978
Pairing: Starbuck/Apollo

Why this must be read: "Sacrifice" is a highly enjoyable riff on the old "conforming to strange cultural practices due to diplomatic relations" scenario, and there's a *reason* that's a cliche...

11th-Mar-2005 03:52 pm "Tales from the Turboflush" by Anna Orr (PG-13)
Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 1978
Pairing: Starbuck/Apollo, Troy/Dillon
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] annaorr
Author Website: Apollolover
Why this must be read: I've already recommended one of Anna's long, plotty epics, "Mapping the Human Genome." This time, I'm recommending one of her short, almost realist stories, in which we see something of Apollo as a father to a boy who's growing up into something other than a cutesy plot device. "Tales from the Turboflush" is a father/son bonding story, and Anna gets teenaged Troy's petulance and fear just right.

Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 1978
Pairing: Starbuck/Apollo
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] audrarose
Author Website: None
Why this must be read: Today's recs are all about the sex. "Don't Move" was written for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide 2004, so it's a recent story, by an author who hasn't written in this fandom before as far as I can tell. But, by gosh, you wouldn't know it by reading the story...

Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 1978
Pairing: Starbuck/Apollo, Athena/Bojay

Why this must be read: Karen's "Dancing Series" is another long, involved space opera, complete with betrayals, back-stabbing, jealousy, weddings, true love, gossip and, of course, hot sex...

Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 1978
Pairing: Starbuck/Apollo
Author on LJ: None
Author Website: Apollolover
Why this must be read: By now, you may be starting to get the impression that BSG78 stories tend to be long. Very long. That's a pretty accurate impression, actually. HeidiM's work is no exception in this regard--she's probably best known for her long, dark, angsty stories. But that's not what I'm reccing today, because I thought it was time for a change of pace...

4th-Mar-2005 02:00 pm "Mapping the Human Genome" by Anna Orr (NC-17)
Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 1978
Pairing: Starbuck/Apollo
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] annaorr
Author Website: Apollolover
Why this must be read: There's something about the premise of BSG that is innately melodramatic, perhaps because it's so epic in scale. The irony is that despite this galactic scope, there's all these long, empty hours between cylon attacks for the pilots to fill, and a limited number of venues in which to fill them. As a result, authors tend to focus on human drama of the most wonderfully soap operatic kind as a basis for their stories (and I don't mean that in any way as an insult--this type of story is generically known as "space opera" for a *reason*). And when it comes to this kind of space opera, the queen of the long, plotty, action-packed melodrama is definitely Anna...

Mapping the Human Genome )

This story could be considered AU, although it doesn't stray terribly far from the tv show's premise. However, if you don't like even mild AU, then this story probably isn't for you.

Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 1978
Pairing: Starbuck/Apollo
Author on LJ: None
Author Website: None
Why this must be read: I've chosen to begin with a story from Battlestar Galactica 1978, because Starbuck and Apollo are one of those classic slash pairings, like Kirk/Spock. They just fit together in the most delicious ways, especially when it's Karo who's fitting them together...

2nd-Mar-2005 06:33 pm Battlestar Galactica: An Overview
I'm your driver for this month's small fandom: Battlestar Galactica. Actually, we have a two-for-one deal this month. As you may be aware, there are two versions of Battlestar Galactica (the original series from 1978, and the new series which is currently screening), and so the [livejournal.com profile] crack_van mods very kindly let me convince them to pimp both fandoms at the same time.

The following manifesto gives a brief overview of the premise and main characters of both versions of BSG, but only contains spoilers for the initial movie (for BSG78) and mini-series (for BSG03). That's mainly because I'm a bit of a spoiler-phobe, and here in Australia we've barely seen any of the new BSG yet. However, I've linked to episode guides at the bottom of this page, so if you're less spoiler-phobic than I am you can get your fix there. I'll update this entry at the end of the month.
