"The Dancing Series" by Karen (NC-17)

I set myself two goals when choosing which BSG stories to rec for![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-community.gif)

1) rec my favourite stories/authors; and
2) give a representative cross-section of the types of stories common to this fandom.
As it happens, part two has proven to be difficult, because there's a definite trend for Dark Fics within BSG78, and as that isn't one of my kinks I don't tend to read them. There are full-on rape-death-angst stories out there, and if you're interested in them, drop me a comment and I'll point you in the right direction.
Karen's wonderful "Dancing Series" is NOT a full-on fic'o'despair, but it's about as Dark as you're going to get from me, so it'll have to do as my representative example. I'll get the obligatory warning out of the way first: there's a brief non-con scene in the first episode, and much of the plot is based around jealousy and bullying (albeit mostly psychological rather than physical).
What makes this story so enjoyable is that Karen leavens the darker aspects with such a strong sense of love and integrity within the characters of Starbuck and Apollo that even while their flaws are on display, you feel for them. I found this series compellingly readable.
