"Sacrifice" by Josephine Darcy (R)
Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 1978
Pairing: Starbuck/Apollo
Author on LJ: None
Author Website: Josephine's Place
Why this must be read: "Sacrifice" is a highly enjoyable riff on the old "conforming to strange cultural practices due to diplomatic relations" scenario, and there's a *reason* that's a cliche...
I'm a fan of Josephine Darcy's writing in The Sentinel fandom, so I was thrilled when I found that she'd also written a BSG78 story. As it turns out, her transition to this new fandom contains a couple of rough patches--specifically, the beginning of the story is a little slow to get going. However, it's well worth sticking with "Sacrifice," because once the boys are down on the planet and undertaking their "diplomatic relations" the story takes off, becoming a well-imagined, thoroughly entertaining read.
"Sacrifice" has alien aphrodisiacs, lewd art in public places, Starbuck rescuing people in highly dramatic aerial maneouvers (and not the kind you're thinking of, either), plus a slowly unfolding friendship/romance that's sweet without being overly-schmoopy.

It takes skill to write such long teasing without it becoming tedious.

I've recc'd it on my LJ, read it at least a dozen times, and it never gets old. :)
