Variation on a theme no. 4: The LKU story
The LKU (Living Kennedy Universe) is a particular favorite within this fandom. Fans who had become attached to the movieverse character of Archie Kennedy refused to accept his death and instead raised denial into an art form producing stories in which the character is alive and well and often living in carnal bliss with Horatio Hornblower. Such stories are both numerous and often quite creative.

Why this must be read:
Most LKUs focus on how Archie Kennedy escapes his canon fate and the immediate aftermath which usually involves the happy – though occasionally bittersweet - reunion shortly thereafter between Archie and Horatio. One of the things that makes this story so intriguing is that it completely dispenses with such a reunion. In fact, the author gives a bit of a handwave to the “how” of Archie’s presence and instead presents us with another intriguing scenario, namely an encounter between Archie, the nameless privateer of the story and Admiral Hornblower many years after the fact. As the author says in her notes, Admiral Hornblower is precisely the kind of officer Archie would have hated and the interaction between these two characters is fascinating to read. The story deftly and cleverly merges book canon with an AU based upon movie canon which is in itself a kind of AU and the results are quite compelling to read.
