Why this must be read:

Two girls and a guy: Oldest story in the book, right? But Summer and Anna snap, crackle, pop with strangely friendly antagonism, like they know something we don't. In this story, set between seasons one and two, Summer escapes the lingering memory of Seth's abandonment by going where everyone would be least likely to look for her -- Anna's. The author nails the two girls' voices, and even through the sweet sexiness, there's a little melancholy, which is just how I like it.


The only time they ever come close to talking about it is in the Andy Warhol Museum. Anna takes her to see the Silver Clouds Room, and Summer’s not typically an arts-girl. It’s really more Marissa’s thing, but she knows that she likes this Andy guy, and she loves these balloons.

Anna corrects her and tells her that they’re really pillows, and she tries to explain the story behind them, but Summer waves a hand to shut her up.

“It makes it less fun if I know why he made them. If I want them to be balloons, they’re just balloons,” she tells Anna, and Anna just laughs.

It suddenly occurs to Summer that Seth would be crazy about this room.

Her throat aches, and she turns to Anna, hoping that Anna will say something witty or stupid or even go back to telling the pillow story. But Anna’s just watching the balloons float into each other, and it occurs to Summer that Anna’s thinking the exact same thing she is: Seth would love this.

Anna speaks without turning to look at her. “You miss him a lot.”
