The Essential Ingredients by Anna S. (PG)

Fandom: FARSCAPE
Pairing: None, Noranti-focused Gen.
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] themoonbar
Author Website: None that I know of
Why this must be read:

Noranti is not exactly a well beloved character in Farscape; not even the other characters can stand her. Something very strange happens when good writers start writing about her, however - she becomes sympathetic and understandable, even while she's spitting into the soup.

Almost less than nothing is known about Noranti's backstory, or why in hezmana she would possibly want to latch on to John and the rest of Moya's crew the way she does, but Anna here presents an interesting possibility for Noranti's motivations that rings very true to what we do see.

"Did you hear about John Crichton?" he asks after a few seconds. She shakes her head and Bebro grins, always pleased to be the first to know.

"He blew up Scorpius' Gammak base. The whole thing is in flames. And then he escaped with a bunch of former prisoners." There's a sense of pride in the slow-witted, Herduf voice, as if it's a personal accomplishment.

She nods at him, but she thinks, John Crichton to herself over and over. Through the long days and twenty-seven new cell-mates, she whispers his name in the quiet.

There were others before him. There always are. Kirna, hero of the seventh planet, who only saw that she was beautiful. J'erf, who stopped the Peacekeepers for a little while. Frej, who looked so promising. Even a hundred cycles later, when she stays in a place too long, it shakes with his screams.

And now, John Crichton. Hero of the uncharted territories, enemy of Scorpius, leader of a renegade band, and deity of the JH45 cell block. The others talk about him; wonder if he'll save them too, and she wants to tell them to wait, have patience, but they don't understand him like she does.

Go, read, review, and maybe understand "Granny" a little better.
