Why this must be read:
With a fandom that is primarily focused on the title character and his immediate contemporaries, I haven't found a dearth of earlier era stories. Happily, I came across this one not too long ago and I loved it. Not only is the reader given a better look into the animosity between Foster and Pellew, but the "lesson" Pellew is taught most likely was something that happened to midshipmen -- that which does not kill us makes us stronger. And knowing how Pellew conducted himself as an officer, as compared to the example we're given of Foster here is an interesting comparison.
