Why this must be read:

Chiana and John's relationship has always existed in the gray, and Rainer does a wonderful job here of juxstaposing what Chiana received from John as a boy, and what she's denied by John as a man.

"W-what's got into you?"

Hard scratch of nails against steel. Chiana lives her life by a code of thievery; liquid silver and the need to push; grinding against reality. It's a simmering kind of heat. She can feel it running through her bones, the same as she can feel it in another pair of eyes, on the far side of the room. You take what you want. "Nuthin'... Yet." You made it as fun as you possibly could.

It's a stuttering laugh, awareness, denial, quick shake of the head and his teeth flash white. Crichton's been riding high since the traders left, the shadows that cloak him cast aside. Chiana wants to share it around a bit, pelvis to pelvis, slow grind, and the space between them is too wide.

He wasn't nearly so difficult as a narl.

Tactile memory doesn't correlate. Chiana remembers a boy with unkempt hair and slim hips; there's hard muscle beneath her now. Agate stare replaced by something that is friendly, ready to tolerate.

He sheltered her since Chiana first arrived on Moya - smudged the edges between friendship and family - some invisible line. He treated her like he treated Livvy. Cussed her out and kicked her in the eema if he thought it was necessary. When she slept badly on Elack, Crichton held her tight against the pain, one hand tangled in her hair. But she frelled him raw when Crichton was still a child; and he doesn't get to play that card any more, brother and sister they are not.
