This is the third of four recommendations around the theme of Clark's alieness.

Why this must be read: Words that come to mind to describe this story include: Gut-wrenching. Powerful. Poignant. Heartbreaking. "Anastomosis" turns canon on its ear and takes a look at what would happen if Jor-El got his way and not even love could stop it.

For a brief moment he sees what his father has done, sees the tear in the soul that divides Kal from Clark and watches the El spill over until Clark is hopelessly muddied and corrupt, bathed in blood and regret. But then the moment is gone, and he is left to the cold, gray world, too chilled for Lex to warm and too lost for Martha to find.

Alee explores the dark side of Clark's alien potential, the conflict between his humanity and what he is destined to become. A beautifully written and fascinating subversion of the Superman myth.

It's very, VERY belated (chalk it up to an un-planned LJ hiatus that I'm only now really coming out of), but I had to say "thank you" for your kind words; I truly appreciate knowing that this one was enjoyed, as it holds a special place in my heart :)
