Flying and Falling by andraste_oz (PG)

Why this must be read:
Another of my favorite subgenres of Lost fic is stories about the reaction back home to the disappearance of our castaways. It isn't anything we've seen on the show and aren't likely to see.
andraste_oz's fic takes what we know about Charlie's brother, Liam, with whom he had a bitter falling out and a failed reconciliation prior to the plane crash, and imagines his guilt and sorrow to have lost Charlie. (Without dipping into "Pacecest" - as many authors like to slash the brothers.)
This fic beautifully conjures up the difficult relationship Liam has had with his "baby brother" and how he resented his talent, which only adds to his guilt now that he's gone. A lovely and lyrical story about loss.
“Daddy,” says Megan one day. “I dreamed about Uncle Charlie.”
“Did you, darling?” he asks her, feeling his face soften, his voice shred into husks.
Megan nods solemnly. “I dreamed he was flying.”
Liam smiles, not wanting to upset her, but the tears are there already and he sees her little face crumple. “It’s ok, sweetheart,” he reassures her, not wanting her to think he’s angry. “Daddy’s not angry at you.”
He’s dreamed about Charlie flying too: Charlie strapped into his seat, chin just skimming the water, struggling to undo the belt as the plane goes under; Charlie struggling for breath as the top of the plane spirals off like apple peel and the oxygen is sucked from his lungs; Charlie screaming, panicking, arms outstretched as he falls from a clear blue tropical sky into an ocean which receives his broken body indifferently, not knowing or caring that he's Liam’s baby brother.
