Like Follows Like by Audra Rourk McHugh (All Ages)

Fandom: Doctor Who
Pairing: None
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author website: Unknown
Why this must be read:

Now, the crackwhores in charge of the 1996 TV Movie (which was very very misguided, in case you missed the overview) decided to mention, just in passing, that the Doctor was half-human. On his mother's side. Everyone was all "What the shit is wrong with you people?! You don't just pull something like that out of your ass because you feel like it!" Most people in the fandom decide to ignore this bit of idiocy (and the other bit, where the Eye of Harmony lives in the TARDIS. What were they thinking??) and pretend that it never happened. It's sort of optional canon, with the vast majority of fandom opting out of it because it makes no sense.

This fic decides to run with the idea. His mother, of course being frail and human, dies and, as a young man, he makes an unfortunate attempt to do something about that, informing his attitudes about messing with timelines and all of that. It is about being stuck between worlds and the questions of what family is and what home is. Entierly worth the read.

Having come across this entirely by chance while browsing friendsfriends (funny how that happens), I should note (since it's archived at my site) that this is filed by the name under which the author originally posted it: a lot of her other works were archived elsewhere under the name of "Anne Ellis", so anyone who enjoyed this story might want to try looking up that name too...

Ten years later, and I'm still waiting for Audra/Anne to come back and finish "Goblin Market". Sigh.

Last I had heard, and this is somewhat hearsay at this point, she had gotten fired from a job because some of her more graphic fics were discovered by her boss/co-workers. She left fandom and ficwriting as a result, and I presume removed several of her fics from the web. :/

"Goblin Market", unfortunately, will probably never be finished.

I think she was also being cyberstalked for a while, which caused her to drop the name she'd been posting under and switch to a new pseud.

[livejournal.com profile] versaphile used to have a page for Anne's fics, but it was taken down. I'm guessing that was at Anne's own request -- but you could ask [livejournal.com profile] versaphile about that.

The link to this fic is dead.
