AT DAWN by NINDULGENCE (G)
*drags self in tardily from sandy beach in Northern Ontario, looking guilty*
Hi, I'm Marna, and now that I have computer access again, I'll besailing the Bloody Indy driving the van for Hornblower this month.
As a writer, I'm Archie Kennedy's Bitch and Major My Lord's personal stenographer, but as a reader I like almost all of the boys and most of the girls, and will be happily reccing fic with any or all of them in it this month.
As so many wonderful reccers have come before me, I'll be concentrating on short pieces, Fictional Hornblower Scholarship, and other such small and easily overlooked but worthy gems of the fandom.
I will probably tend not to list pairings, as many of the pieces I have in mind rely on some degree of surprise or ambivalence or both.
Fandom: HORNBLOWER

Why this must be read: Nin's greatest strength is short, brilliantly polished pieces which capture character and emotion wonderfully -- and also place the Hornblower characters firmly and naturally inside the culture and time in which they live, both bringing it to life and giving the characters an added depth thereby.
Here, she explores one of the ways in which the events of Mutiny and Retribution have consequences both wide- and long-ranging, touching people we don't know and changing the lives of those we do know forever.
As an added bonus, this story comes with a link to the gorgeous piece of fanart by
black_hound which inspired it.
Lord Craven--true to his name--had lost his nerve.
