Alara gives us a clear-eyed look at one aspect of raising a half-Human, half-Sebacean child, and that is the staggering cultural differences between John and Aeryn. What we see of Peacekeeper upbringing is dark and regimented, cruel by American standards. Aeryn perceives John’s upbringing to be coddling, useless for preparing a child to survive in a harsh universe.
This isn’t a conflict that will go away, but Alara’s glimpse into one night shows us a way to negotiate a middle ground.
