Another post-Retribution story, with the ghost of Archie weighting heavily over the Hotspur, affecting Horatio's willingness and ability to connect with other people, and leading to his abrupt change in behaviour and personality, from idealist young Lieutenant to an aloof and withdrawn Commander. Lieutenant Bush, the most likely candidate to replace Archie's part in Horatio's life is the one most stubbornly pushed away by Hornblower, out of fear of history repeating itself.

Both characters are drawn out well against the background of the perilous life aboard the Hotspur, and their developing relationship is outlined thoughtfully in all its complexities, with an ending that's hopeful and open to interpretation.
