The Long Haul by Yahtzee (PG)
Fandom: STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE
Pairing: none
Author on LJ:
yahtzee63
Author Website: Yahtzee Genre Edition
Why this must be read:
It's easy to forget that Kira Nerys -- former terrorist, religious believer, unrepentant racist -- isn't the most obvious Trek second-in-command. The early DS9 seasons played up the conflicts between Kira & the Federation, and Yahtzee picks up this thread in 'The Long Haul'. Set before the Federation arrives on the station, it's a quiet character exploration, as Kira reflects on the different demands that peace & collaboration are bound to bring. There's also a subtle portrait of her friendship with Odo. Yahtzee's handle on the character voices is, as ever, perfect.
"The Aelfahl River needs damming," she says.
Odo blinks. It's a trick she helped teach him; his stare used to unnerve people. Unnerve them more, that is. "Will you request Federation aid for that?"
"I don't know." She runs one hand through her cropped-close hair. "They cross the galaxy on pleasure trips. They make fine wines out of thin air. What do they know about dams?"
"I'm certain that at least one planet, among the hundreds in the Federation, has built a dam before."
